Guards at City Homeless Shelters Fight Wage & Benefit Cuts
April 25, 2009 03:59 PM PDT
When Mayor Nutter first announced his budget cuts, he slated many of the city's homeless shelters to have reduced staff, and cut back security guards' wages. Within one week of announcing his plan, he cut the wages and benefits of security guards who work in shelters and deal with dangerous conditions everyday. These workers had the choice of either taking pay cuts -- from $13/hr to $7/hr -- and losing benefits, or losing their jobs. On March 5th, SEIU 32BJ held a rally outside city hall to demand respect and living wages from the Mayor. Amendu Evans brings us this report from the rally. |
