Del Monte Fresh Produce Company recently left their union-run Camden operation for a non-union competitor. The move is expected to cost the International Longshoremen's Union 200-300 local jobs and result in lower safety standards for workers. In the words of one union member who has worked for Del Monte in Camden for more than a decade, "In the end it will create more working poor." In response, the International Longshoremen's Association has called for a boycott of Del Monte. In this piece, William Kevin Jones, a member of International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), speaks about his union's battle with Del Monte. Amendu Evans produced this story.

The Cambodian community of Philadelphia gathered across from City Hall and Love Park on October 8th to speak out against a recent wave of detentions and deportations. They called on immigration officials and politicians to take a look at these cases and allow valuable members of their community to stay united with their families. Joe Hanzsum of AZI fellas explains the origins of Cambodian immigration to Philadelphia. He explains that these community members came here as child refugees, fleeing the Khmer Rouge genocide. Ria Cruz, the pregnant wife of a detained refugee, speaks about her family's struggle to stay together.

One Man's Story of Homelessness in Camden's Tent City

When officials closed down Camden's Tent City this past May, they promised the 54 homeless residents that it was not an eviction, but the first step to a better life. Now, less than 6 months later, many of them are once again homeless and some have created a new Tent city encampment near the original site.

Back in April, when Camden's Tent City was still intact, members of Media Mobilizing Project & Poor Voices United visited the encampment. They recorded an interview with James Luddy about how he became homeless and life in Tent City.

The Unjust Detention of Ly Hov Khol

On August 12th, Philadelphians gathered to protest the detention and deportation of Ly Hov Khol, a refugee of the Khmer Rouge Regime and an active and valuable member of Philadelphia's Cambodian-American community. Ly was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is now being held at a detention center out of state, awaiting his impending deportation to Cambodia.

Many more Cambodian-Americans across the country will be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the coming months and will be denied due process in the same way. You can support due process rights for all those being detained, by signing this petition urging the President to stop the deportation of Cambodian American Refugees.

This story features highlights from the South Philadelphia rally to protest Ly's deportation, and an interview with Mia-lia Kiernan of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia. Charles Clarke produced this piece.

Fighting for Jobs in Pennsylvania

The Way to Work program is a statewide initiative that has put 12,000 adults back to work in full time employment and 14,000 youth into summer employment. This program is slated to be cut off on September 30th. Many people across the state are pushing to extend this program, in hopes of lessening the unemployment crisis instead of adding to it.

In this piece, Philadelphians who have benefited from this program share their stories about getting back to work. Sandi Vito, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, also speaks about the fight to extend this inititiave.

Nutter's Firestation Brown-Out Policy Claims a Life

After a tragic fire near 55th & Sansom (West Philadelphia) took the life of a 12 year old named Frank Marasco, neighbors and firefighters gathered for a vigil in front of the home. Those who spoke at the vigil blamed Mayor Nutter's 'brown-out' policy for the firefighters' unnecessarily long response time. The policy, which involves temporarily closing fire stations around the city, was part of Nutter's plan to cut the city budget. Though Engine 57 is located only blocks from Frank Marasco's home, it had been shut down the evening of the fire, as part of the 'brown-out' policy. Up to six million workers are injured each year in the United States. 6,000 are killed outright. At least 50,000 die each year from work related disease. Every year, Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Safety and Health (PhilaPOSH) recognizes Workers Memorial Day and honors people who have been killed on the job. This memorial ceremony is part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about the rights of workers' and the importance of safe working conditions across all industries. SEIU vs. Team Clean: Fighting for Better Wages for School Janitors

Domestic Workers United (DWU) is an organization that fights for the rights of nannies, elderly caregivers, housekeepers and other workers who work inside people's homes. In this interview, Yvonne, a live-in nanny and member of DWU shares stories that illustrate the need for domestic workers to have equal labor protections and benefits-- two things that they are currently not getting under the law. The Domestic Workers Bill of Rights would change that.

AraMark Accused Of Wage Theft

The Philadelphia Joint Board has filed a complaint in court that accusses AraMark of not paying earned overtime to workers at Citizens Bank Park, home the Phillies baseball team, Lincoln Financial Feild, home of the Eagles NFL football team, and the Spectrum, home of the Flyers NHL hockey team. The complaint further alledges that AraMark deducts a half hour from any worker who puts in six hours or more whether they took a break or not. Nurses and technicians at Temple University Hospital are facing a "Gag Order" in their proposed contract with Temple University Health Systems. This order could mean fines for any member of PASNAP, the nurse's union, who says anything negative about Temple in public. A report by Milena Velis.

Healthcare Workers Unite for Respect in Pottstown

Healthcare workers at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center (PMMC) have been trying to bargain a new contract for months. But Community Health Systems, the national for-profit company that owns their community hospital, has not been bargaining in good faith. Now, the workers at PMMC are preparing for a three day strike over unfair labor practices. They have also filed charges with the labor board to get Community Health Systems to stop violating federal labor law.

The Pottstown community is standing with workers. There was a community vigil in a Pottstown church recently, in support of the healthcare workers. In this piece, we hear the voices of PMMC workers and participants at the vigil. All of the workers in this piece are members of SEIU.

Temple Nurses Prepare for Strike

On September 28th, nurses from the Pennsylvania Association of School Nurses And Practicioners (PASNAP) held a rally outside Temple Hospital at Broad and Tioga. The nurses are planning to strike over a contract dispute with Temple University Health System (TUHS). The core concerns for nurses include Temple University Hospital System's refusal to negotiate over salary (including negotiations over cost of living increases); Temple's recent decision to phase out tuition reimbursement for dependents of hospital employees, and what PASNAP believes is an excessive increase in employee contribution to healthcare (TUHS is asking employee contributions to jump from $180 a month to $360 a month). The strike, originally planned for the weekend of October 3rd, has been postponed. In the following clip, Bob Cruice of PASNAP talks about Temple's tactics to resist the worker's demands. During our time at the Leadership School, we studied together, taught one another, and worked towards Reigniting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign today. At the end of the week-long school, Amendu Evans spoke to Reverend Mavuso Mbhekiseni, who is a member of the Rural Network in South Africa and a part of the Shackdwellers Movement (Abahlali baseMjondolo). Amendu also talked to Chris Caruso, who is part of the Poverty Initiative at Union Theological Seminary. This audio piece captures some of their reflections on the school.

Since January, nurses inside Hahnemann Hospital in Center City Philadelphia have been working towards unionizing. Despite the union-busting tactics employed by Tenet management, nurses have organized in support of joining Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP). Currently, Hahnemann workers are awaiting a decision from the National Labor Relations Board to find out if the results of their recent union vote will be counted. In the midst of this uncertainty, one nurse agreed to an anonymous interview with Labor Justice Radio. Guards at City Homeless Shelters Fight Wage & Benefit Cuts

When Mayor Nutter first announced his budget cuts, he slated many of the city's homeless shelters to have reduced staff, and cut back security guards' wages. Within one week of announcing his plan, he cut the wages and benefits of security guards who work in shelters and deal with dangerous conditions everyday. These workers had the choice of either taking pay cuts -- from $13/hr to $7/hr -- and losing benefits, or losing their jobs. On March 5th, SEIU 32BJ held a rally outside city hall to demand respect and living wages from the Mayor. Amendu Evans brings us this report from the rally.

"Cab Drivers are being Pushed to the Wall Again": Airport Raises Taxi Fees

The Philadelphia International Airport Authority is raising the egress fee for all taxis working at the airport. The increase, which would raise the fee from $1.50 to $2.25, is slated to go into effect at the end of March. Taxi Drivers Discuss Poor Working Conditions Caused by Faulty GPS System

In 2006, the Philadelphia Parking Authority mandated that GPS systems be installed in all of Philly's taxicabs. Aside from questions about the PPA's contract with Taxitronics for the GPS units -- Taxitronics had their GPS contract with the City of New York revoked after a government investigation uncovered corruption in how Taxitronics won the lucrative contract -- there are persistent problems with the GPS units. Patrick Anamah & Femi Animashaun discuss the problems that cab drivers face due to these faulty GPS units, and appeal to the Philadelphia Parking Authority to correct its mistake.

Taxi Drivers Declare Victory in Court, Establish Oversight for Philadelphia Parking Authority

The court ruled in favor of the Unified Taxi Workers Alliance (UTWA) giving the Commonwealth Court jurisdiction over PPA and offering taxi drivers a place to have their voice heard in regards to PPA regulations. Members of the Unified Taxi Workers Alliance celebrated the victory as an important step in winning back simple workers rights in the industry. On November 1st, over 1000 people marched down market street, declaring that Chinatown should not be transformed into a gambling district. At the public meeting that followed the march, Philadelphia City Council unanimously voted to to recommend approval of the zoning bills that would pave the way for Foxwoods Casino. But in recent years, a new hope for reform in Florida's fields has emerged: the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). The CIW's current campaign is aimed at Subway and Chipotle, two fast food companies that refuse to recognize the human rights abuses in Florida's fields, even as they make billions off of the tomato pickers' labor. "Drive-by Ticketing": Philadelphia Parking Authority Exploits Taxi Drivers

The Philadelphia Parking Authority is using abusive ticketing practices to wring more money out of taxi workers' pockets. Dubbed "drive-by ticketing" by cab divers, this practice includes ticketing cabs while they drop off or pick up passengers --even at designated cab stands-- and mailing tickets up to weeks later, making it very difficult to for drivers to contest these violations and forcing drivers to pay large fines. Juntos, an immigrant workers organization, is organizing parents around the serious lack of translators in Philadelphia public schools, especially in South Philly, where many parents speak little or no English. Milena Velis spoke to parents about their campaign. Since this piece was aired, members of JUNTOS succeeded in getting 4 deputies of the Philadelphia School District to meet with them and listen to their demands. But parents are still waiting to hear whether the school district will create an office of translation to address the need for more interpreters. Juntos plans to hold a public action soon to bring more attention to this issue.

SEIU Stands Up Against Abusive Immigration Raid

On July 31st, 42 members of SEIU 32BJ were arrested during an immigration raid at ABM Industries. The week of the raid, ABM replaced the janitors' paychecks with a letter telling them to report to a mandatory meeting. When workers arrived, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested all non-US citizens on the spot. On August 7th, SEIU 32BJ held a rally in Norristown to protest the actions of ABM & ICE. Workers at the Embassy Suites, together with UNITE HERE, have been staging a boycott of the hotel since December of 2007. They are asking supporters not to eat, sleep, or meet at the Embassy Suites until a fair settlement is reached. In October of 2007, Embassy Suites "permanently replaced" thirty-one workers. These workers had honored a picket line of building trades unions protesting non-union construction work at their hotel. Workers are demanding affordable healthcare, a fair contract, and respect on the job.
